Heading into the weekend, when we’ll all probably be gorging on leftover Valentine’s Day chocolate, here’s another study that shows keeping the weight down is important.

Being overweight may increase your risk of developing up to a dozen types of cancer. European researchers tracked subjects matching their body mass index with incidents of cancer. The research, published in The Lancet, found that an average weight gain of 33 pounds in men increased their risk of esophageal cancer by 52 percent, thyroid cancer by 33 percent, and colon and kidney cancers each by 24 percent. In women, a weight gain of 29 pounds increased the risk of uterine and gall bladder cancer by nearly 60 percent, esophageal by 51 percent and kidney by 34 percent. The link was weaker for bone and blood cancers.

Here’s one woman who plays by the rules - or at least labour rules.

Yesterday, the driver of a Greyhound charter bus pulled over on a highway in Texas, parked in front of a convenience store and got out saying she couldn’t drive anymore because she had tapped her allowed hours on the road. Okay, fair enough. But her bus was loaded with ex-prisoners (some of whom were wearing tracking devices on their ankles) and she just left them there. She walked away promptly as the clock struck 4PM. Cinderella should have been so punctual, then she wouldn’t have lost that glass slipper!

Anyhow, police were called and they kept an eye on the ex-jailbirds who were destined for a bus depot in Houston. Another bus finally showed up about 3 hours later. Greyhound says it’s investigating. A veteran police officer says he’s never seen anything like it in thirty years.

Napoleon’s been dead for nearly two centuries and people are still trying to figure out what killed the guy. Geez! Most of us can only hope for a quick autopsy and that we’re remembered on a family tree for a couple of generations.

So, the latest on Napoleon is: (drum roll please..) it was NOT arsenic poisoning. Good. Now we can all rest easy.

So, how did the experts determine this? Italian researchers put capsules of the long ago emperor’s hair into the core of a small nuclear reactor at a lab in Padua (I think it all sounds more dangerous than it actually is). They compared it to hair from the emperor’s two wives and one son and determined they all had the same high level of arsenic in them. It’s enough to be considered toxic today, but it wasn’t what killed Napoleon. So, they’re back at square one; the mystery continues.

AAARRGGGHH!! I’m going through “24″ withdrawal and it doesn’t look like any relief is on the way!

The writers’ strike in Hollywood is almost over but, if you look at the timetables for new episodes, we still have some time to wait before our favourite shows are really back.

Hits like “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and the “CSI” shows should return this spring with anywhere from four to seven new episodes. Producers will need at least four weeks to get most comedies back up and running and dramas will take even longer (probably six to eight weeks). But some of the more complex ones may not even return at all because it would be too much work just to shoot a handful of shows. Some that aren’t expected back before fall: “Heroes”and “Dirty Sexy Money.”

And now they’re saying “24” is unlikely to be back until early 2009!! I watched all of the seasons on DVD and really need something to fill the void now! I thought I’d have an entire new season to watch by late fall or Christmas at the latest, but now it’ll take even longer for the DVD set to hit the market!

Who would think of training a frog to sit on a toy motorcycle?! I guess the guy accomplished at least part of his goal because his frog had its picture taken and is getting attention. But look at that frog.. it’s just not right..

I’m rooting for the frog and hoping that one of these days it figures out how to start the bike and runs off to join the Hell’s Angels or something!
