In honour of all the anti-Valentine’s Day-ers..

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Relationship gone sour? Here’s an outlet for your emotions. How about writing an obituary for your lost love? Relationshipobit.com is the creation of New York reporter Kathleen Horan.

I don’t know if it’s as cathartic as, say, making a bonfire out the ex’s belongings and using a photo as the bull’s eye on a dart board but, at the very least, some of your poetry will finally get published!

Will Cupid Strike?

Happy Valentine’s Day! Love is in the air, so I guess it’s only fitting to have some posts on the subject.

If you’re still searching for the perfect match, don’t worry. Dating “experts” say the love of your life might be one glance away. And a lot of Canadians seem to believe that too; a survey finds 55% believe in love at first sight. Who knows, maybe it does happen!

If you (or someone you know) are in need of some dating tips, check out a new site that claims to be full of “all star” pointers.

Flattering Words

Friday, February 8th, 2008

“What is that sticking out of your chin?” “Why does your breath stink?” “I won’t eat THAT.. it looks.. yuuuuuuuuccckkkkk!” The compliments just flow so gracefully from preschoolers, don’t they? Seems children only start to click on the concept of flattery after they turn 4 (so hold on, the day will come!).

Canadian and Chinese researchers looked at groups of 3 to 6 year olds and found that the youngest ones were always brutally honest in their opinions, but the older ones “watched” their words and tended to use flattery.

Good to see social awareness eventually kicks in. Lying is far from good, but you don’t want to be starting a new job when you’re 20 and thinking it’s okay to tell your boss that the vile lunch she basically inhaled left her breath smelling like vomit and.. oh yeah.. where did she forget the tweezers today??

Getting in the Mood

Started planning your Valentine’s Day dinner yet?

Here are some items you might want to put on the menu: asparagus, bananas and figs. They’re among the top 10 foods listed as great aphrodisiacs. Of course, the usual oysters and chocolate are up there, too!

Some others suggested by foodpaper.com: almonds, avocados, basil, eggs and foie gras (I’m not sure the ducks would agree with that one..). Try them all and at the very least you’re guaranteed to be stuffed (something those foie gras ducks might see as poetic justice).
